The title is ironic
The title comes from a speech in which a lawyer (Mr. Jaggers) explains to young Pip (the protagonist) that he is to be taken from his lowly home, where he has had expectations of following in his brother-in-laws (Joe Gargerys) footsteps to commence a blacksmith, and instead educated to become a adult male (in those days, the word meant a man of independent means). The great expectations to which Jaggers refers is the chance which Pip should expect to inherit at the end of this education. I dont want to ruin the story for anyone who hasnt read it, so I wont assign away any facts about whether those expectations ever come about.
The title, however, to a fault has an ironic sense, because Pip has a great [ umpteen] expectations beyond verbalise fortune. He believes that he is being prepared to marry Estella. [Note that her adduce means star, and Pip believes she is his guiding star. A blow-by-blow reading will pay dividends as you notice how fiend plays with this symbol, and others, throughout the text.] Then, after the marriage, he expects to inherit Miss Havishams estate, Satis House. A third layer of meaning, is in the narrators (the Pip who is looking back on his life) sense of many great things expected of him by God, or fate, or his feature conscience (or what you will). He realizes, looking back, that he was too eminent in the very worst sense of the word, and too unsusceptible to those whom he really owes his love and allegiance. His guilt for the neglect that he shows to Joe, and to others whose names I will not mention (since, again, I dont want to spoil anything), causes him to reflect deplorably on his experiences. He did not always live up to the great expectations, that he now has of himself, of what a decent military man being owes to himself and others.
