THE HANDS
The Hands by Sherwood Anderson is a short story near aviate Biddlebaum, a fat, little, old
man from Winesburg, Ohio. He is a in truth mysteries old man that was often frightened, and had
jittery, over-active hands. He lived on the outskirts of township and liked to sit and watch the women
and children return from picking berries. His precisely friend and the only person he ever let get
close to him is George Willard, the young reporter from the Winesburg Eagle. The main story of
Wing Biddlebaum is the story of his hands.
Wing Biddlebaum spoke excitedly with his hands that would track down with excessive
excitement. In the story Sherwood Anderson compares the restless activity of his hands to the
flogging of the wings of an imprisoned bird, hence where the name Wing came from. He tried
his best to keep his hands hidden unless he was talking with George. When talking to George he
would close his fist and beat them on the mesa or the walls of the house and if they were walking
in the field, he would stump the baksheesh board of the fence. The action with his hands made him
more at ease and able to speak. When he saw others in the fields or pass by him that could
keep their hands still, he would stare in quiet amazement.

Wing Biddlebaums hands attracted the aid of Winesburg merely because of their
excessive activity. They were his distinguished feature and the source of his fame, especially
when he picked a hundred and forty quarts of strawberries in a day. simply many citizens, including
George Willard, had many times that they wanted to ask about his hands and why he seemed
frightened by their power. George closely asked him once while the two were walking in the
fields one summer afternoon and Wing was talking excitedly about George being to easily
influenced by the townspeople. Only a maturement respect of Wing kept him from revealing the
many questions that haunt his mind.
